One of the best ways that us students can stay on top form during our revision time and exam period is to firstly, chill the fuck out.

Revision and exams aren’t the end of the world, and really, they’re not hard. Well, they shouldn’t be – we chose our course, so we should have some interest in what we’re trying to cram in our revision seshes – it’s all about your approach and your mental state, read on for our top tips, as voted for by you, the student.

Grab a revision partner. Not only does this help you to motivate each other, but it allows you to bounce ideas off each other, get into discussions about the things that you’re trying to remember, which in turn etches them deeper into your hungover brain. When you revise in a group or with a partner, you are allowing yourself to encounter conflicting opinions, and in turn, motivates you to explain your views and points about the subject – very useful to gain a wider perspective than if it were just you and a book.

Take regular breaks. Yeah, you heard – it’s no good revising for 6 hours straight then feeling like wank afterwards and either feeling too frazzled to continue, or continuing and not taking anything in. You’re at your best when you revise in hour bursts. Hour revision, 20 mins break, rinse and repeat. This way, you can satisfy any nagging needs, facebook, food, drink, jig, calls, whatever, and continue without anything distracting you for too long. This also helps to put in place a structure.

Structure your revision into a timetable based on when your exams are being taken. This is a great way to ensure the stuff you’re revising is as up to date as possible, and as fresh in your brain as you can make it. Theres no point revising something from start to finish when the exam is the last one you take. It may seem obvious, but we know a lot of fellow students who make this mistake! If you can, divide out your subjects into days, and then parts of the subjects into hours – this effectively turns your revision into manageable chunks that you can alter as necessary depending on whether you need more time on one thing, and less on another.

Use mind maps. Yeah, we said it – Mind maps aren’t just for 10 year olds trying to learn about photosynthesis, they’re a powerful visual learning tool that allows you to not only learn by association, but also visually, like a camera. Last year, a student and myself revised International Marketing by using this method, we had a bunch of different types of ‘international distribution’ methods that we needed to know, each with a load of individual characteristics. We dealt with this by plotting each one down on a mind map, with each of their attributes coming out, and adding on further relevant pointers. It was a great way to visually remember that ‘such and such is associated with this, which is associated with that’, and is a far more enriching way to revise than reading notes, or reading from a text book.

Grab a couple of fresh note pads, read, process and rewrite down only the most important points of each subject that you’re revising. Not only does this mean that you’re filtering out the jargon, but you’re also re-learning what you need, and keeping the most important bits in your revision book. When you complete a subject area, you’re left with the key issues that you can flick to, spend 5 minutes glancing at, then move on as you get closer to your exam.

Finally, chill, start in good time and relax knowing that you have structure, order and purpose to your revision and exams.

When your attitude is in a calm and organised state, so will your actions be.
