Free Student Entertainment

It might be hard to believe, but there are lots more ways to have a good time at uni than to go out and get wasted all the time! Here are a few ideas…

Keep an eye on My Uni Guide’s Daily Deal in your city – always locatable on the right hand side of the website, it gives you the chance to get up to 90% off events in your city ranging from Cinema tickets, Spa breaks, activity days, clothes shopping, restaurants and more! - Go to uni events: These are often free and sometimes really good! My personal favourite is my uni’s open mic night: free entertainment every week and a great way to discover some good talent to follow. If it’s free, bear in mind that the student union relies on people spending at the bar to fund it, so you might want to buy the odd drink or packet of crisps to keep them going, but don’t have to go crazy on the spending!

- Do something cultural: Whatever uni you go to, there’s probably some kind of local museum, cathedral, gallery or some such place to go. These normally ask for donations rather than charging an admission fee, so you can spend as much or as little as you want.

- Play cards: This is really more fun than it might sound – I used to play almost every night with my flat mates and we had great fun! – some of our favourite games are Slam (otherwise known as Spit or Speed) and Cub Rummy. Just use a search engine to find rules for these and loads of other games.

- Go to free gigs: Most nights there will probably a pub where student or local bands or singers are playing, and entry will often be free. Even if you don’t enjoy the music, at least you’ll know who to avoid next time you go to a gig!

- Go for a walk: Depending on where you live, there might be a nice place such as a river or park where you can take a stroll. This is a great way to get some fresh air and a bit of exercise, as well as taking in the scenery and enjoying a bit of peace and relaxation.

- Go for a bike ride: If walking isn’t your thing, and you’re lucky enough to own a bike, why not cycle along that lovely scenic route you’ve found?!

- Play badminton: This is really good fun, keeps you active and between a small group it should only cost a couple of quid each to book a court and borrow some shuttlecocks and racquets.

- Go to the park: If the weather’s nice, a trip to the park with friends is guaranteed to be a laugh. Take along a Frisbee, football, cricket or rounders set, or whatever other amazingly good fun items you might have! You might even find yourself killing two birds with one stone by getting a bit of exercise at the same time!

- Go to the beach: Kind of weather and location dependant, but a free (or cheap if you need to hop on a train to get there!) day out. Like with the park, you can take your own fun and games with you. Even if the weather isn’t fantastic, a walk along the beach could still be really nice, particularly in the evening as the sun sets. And if the weather is great, the tan will be a bonus. Just don’t forget to wear sun cream!

- Look out for free stuff to do: Some pubs offer free pool and darts on certain days of the week. Look out for bargains like this, as well as things like screenings of live sporting events.
