HOW TO LEAVE UNI DEBT FREE …(WELL NEARLY)!
Apply, Apply, Apply!
The most important thing about applying for a graduate job or an internship is getting around to doing it! There are a large amount of students who aren’t aware that most large companies open their graduate recruitment in August, before most students have even returned to university.
Now there is no need to panic if you haven’t applied already, but you may want to check out the deadlines of the company your applying for soon. Alternatively if your not sure who has a deadline that is currently open you may want to visit graddiary.com as they list over 250 graduate vacancies.
Research
So now you know where you want to apply, make sure that you undertake thorough research before you fill out an online application. Find out
1) Where the company have international offices,
2) What industries they operate in,
3) Recent news surrounding the company,
4) What they are industry leaders in,
5) WHY YOU want to work for that company!
You can do this by speaking to people at careers events, looking at their website, or searching related news websites/publications such at the BBC or the Economist. It is also important to read up on the industry and your company’s main competitors so make sure your knowledge is well rounded.
CV Savvy!
C.V’s and cover letters are always tricky and they are very much a matter of personal opinion. However spelling mistakes on a C.V will always reflect badly and probably result in your C.V being put to the bottom of the pile so make sure you check that your spelling is perfect. Double check that your spellchecker is set to English not US English.
The Next Step
Having received an email/telephone call to invite you to an interview make sure you look the part. This doesn’t mean you need to rush out and buy a new suit or outfit, but you should make sure the one you do have is clean and you look presentable. Think about the job your interviewing for. As a rule of thumb it is always better to overdress than under dress so a tie or more formal skirt will always be a safer option than chinos or a summary dress.
